CBD and children is not a question a retail label can answer. The CDC says the effects of CBD on developing brains are unknown. The FDA has approved one prescription CBD drug for certain seizure disorders, but that does not make store-bought CBD products approved treatments for children.
Separate Prescription CBD From Retail CBD
Epidiolex is an FDA-approved prescription medicine with a defined formulation, labeled uses, clinical oversight, and manufacturing controls. Gummies, oils, beverages, and other retail CBD products are different products. Do not use the approval of one prescription drug as evidence that a retail item is safe, effective, or correctly labeled for a child.
Know the Accidental Exposure Risk
Edibles can resemble familiar candy or snacks. Product contents may differ from the label, and some CBD products can contain THC. Children may have stronger or less predictable effects from an unintended exposure.
If a child may have swallowed a CBD or cannabis product, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 in the United States. Call 911 for trouble breathing, severe sleepiness, collapse, a seizure, or another emergency.
Save the Evidence Before You Call
- Keep the package, label, receipt, lot number, and remaining product.
- Record the possible amount and the earliest exposure time.
- Note symptoms and when they began.
- Save the batch report or QR-code destination.
- Do not induce vomiting unless a medical professional instructs you.
Use the unexpected reaction guide for evidence-saving steps and the product reporting guide after the immediate risk is addressed.
Store Every Product as a Potential Exposure
Keep CBD and cannabis products in a locked, childproof container, out of sight and reach. Keep the original packaging. Avoid storing gummies beside food or candy. Do not rely on a high shelf alone.
Use the CBD storage checklist for a room-by-room safety review.
