20-brand documentation audit

In a September 5, 2026 purposive audit of 20 CBD sellers, every seller exposed a public route to lab results, but the strength of the evidence varied. Seventeen showed a clear path to an exact batch or lot, one raised a batch-linking concern, and two remained unknown at that level. THC wording was the weakest field: 12 of 20 sampled brands used wording that earned a Concern under the narrow method below.

What This Report Measures

This is a purposive documentation sample, not a random sample of the CBD market. Brands were chosen from CBDCafe.org’s current Product Passport and Brand Report Card work, then extended with active sellers that expose consumer-facing lab evidence. The audit asks three repeatable questions.

  1. Public COA access: Can a shopper reach a seller-provided lab-results page or product-linked certificate without buying first?
  2. Exact batch path: Does the seller expose a batch or lot lookup, a product-specific batch record, or another clear route that can connect a package to a certificate?
  3. THC wording: Does the sampled seller wording stay within what the public lab evidence can support? Absolute zero claims and categorical promises about intoxication earn extra scrutiny when a report uses non-detect language, reporting limits, or shows measurable THC.

Potency and package math were also checked when the public records exposed compatible units. We did not force a numeric comparison when a seller used milligrams per gram while the package used milligrams per milliliter and no density was available.

StatusMeaning in This Report
PassThe checked public documentation supported the narrow field.
ConcernA conflict, overstatement, missing link, or verification problem was found.
UnknownThe evidence checked was not enough to rate the field defensibly.

Download the Report Data

Frozen data release v1.0.0, September 8, 2026. The CSV preserves the September 5, 2026 audit of 20 deliberately selected brands. Preparing this download did not recheck seller claims. It contains the three report fields, the audit date, source links, scope limits, and separate component dates marked Unknown where they were not recorded.

Report page version 1.1.0, September 12, 2026. Later evidence checks and correction notes are recorded below without rewriting the frozen audit rows or headline totals. The downloadable CSV and JSON remain v1.0.0 so their 20 records still reconcile with the visible September 5 snapshot.

These are documentation findings. The sample does not represent the whole market, and a Pass is not a safety or quality endorsement.

Report Corrections and Later Evidence Checks

Report page version 1.1.0. The table below separates corrections and later checks from the frozen September 5 audit. A later Brand Report Card can change because seller documentation changed after the audit date without retroactively changing the original 20-brand result.

DateRecordChanged field or evidenceSupporting recordEffect on September 5 report totals
September 7, 2026PP-018 Extract Labs Muscle CreamPreviously unreadable certificate was recovered. The exact lot report now records 30.845 mg/g CBD and 0.439 mg/g Total THC; package-total comparison remains Unknown because finished-package mass was not measured.PP-018 evidence recordNone. The 20-brand report scores COA access, exact-batch path and sampled THC wording, not this package-total calculation.
September 7, 2026PP-019 Extract Labs 3000mg OilBroken certificate link was replaced with the seller’s working lot record. Total THC was corrected from 3.438 mg/g to 1.346 mg/g; package comparison remains Unknown because density or unit mass is missing.PP-019 evidence recordNone. The correction does not change the frozen report’s three audit fields.
September 12, 2026BR-015 WYLD CBDCurrent brand-level THC wording is Concern because the live sitewide 0% THC statement conflicts with full-spectrum products listing measurable THC. The September 5 sampled report row remains Pass.BR-015 current documentation reviewNone. This is later seller evidence, not a retroactive edit to the September 5 sample.
September 12, 2026BR-017 Koi CBDCurrent brand-level THC wording and label/policy clarity are Concern after later pages showed categorical drug-test language and conflicting 30-day versus 90-day return terms. The September 5 sampled THC row remains Pass.BR-017 current documentation reviewNone. The frozen September 5 counts are unchanged.
September 12, 2026BR-019 MedterraThe report evidence trail now points to the published Brand Report Card rather than only the seller COA page. Batch-path Pass and THC-wording Concern remain the same as the September 5 audit.BR-019 current documentation reviewNone. This is an evidence-trail update only.
September 12, 2026PP-005, PP-008, PP-009, PP-010 and PP-015Public seller routes were rechecked. Exact listed batches or product-linked routes remain available, but unreadable or unreviewed certificate chemistry stays Unknown. No chemistry result was promoted.Product Passport directoryNone. No verified audit-field change was found.
Version rule: the frozen data export changes only when the audit dataset itself is corrected. Later seller changes, refreshed Brand Report Cards, inaccessible certificates, and new Passport evidence are logged here without silently changing the original sample.

Frozen September 5 snapshot: 20 of 20 brands exposed a public lab-results route. Seventeen received Pass for the exact-batch path, CBDistillery received Concern because the sampled seller page linked a current certificate without exposing a visible lot number on the product page, and BATCH and FOCL remained Unknown at that level in this check. THC wording returned 6 Pass, 12 Concern, and 2 Unknown. Later changes to individual Brand Report Cards are recorded in the version history and do not alter these snapshot totals.

What the Audit Found Beyond the Scorecard

Public Lab Access Is Common, but Access Is Not the Same as Verification

A lab-results link is only the first step. The stronger systems let a shopper take a code from the package and retrieve the matching record. cbdMD, NuLeaf Naturals, WYLD CBD, Green Roads, and Koi CBD all expose batch-number or product-code lookup tools. Medterra describes batch-linked certificate pages for its products. BATCH links to a public lab-results library, while FOCL says testing links appear in product descriptions, but the exact package-to-batch path was not verified in this audit.

“THC-Free” Can Hide an Important Measurement Detail

Several sellers use phrases such as “THC-free,” “zero THC,” “0% THC,” or “does not contain THC.” A laboratory can instead report a cannabinoid as ND, below a limit of detection, or below a limit of quantitation. Those phrases are not interchangeable with proof of absolute zero. NuLeaf Naturals’ own COA guidance explains that ND means the amount is below the detection limit or none was found, while its broad-spectrum product page also uses zero-THC and 0% THC language. That gap is why the report marks absolute wording as a Concern rather than treating a non-detect result as mathematical zero.

cbdMD’s current Broad Spectrum CBD Calming Gummies page shows an even clearer documentation conflict. The page calls the formula THC-free, lists “Full Spectrum Hemp Extract” in its ingredient text, warns that the product contains hemp-derived THC and may cause a positive drug screen, then later answers “No!” when asked whether the gummies contain THC. Those statements appear on the same seller page, so cbdMD receives a Concern for THC wording in this audit.

Categorical Intoxication Promises Deserve the Same Scrutiny

Cornbread Hemp and BATCH each use categorical non-intoxication wording on products that contain or are described as containing measurable or trace THC. The issue here is not a prediction about any buyer. It is that a seller cannot know every person’s response from a product page. This report records the wording conflict and stops there.

Some COA-to-Label Comparisons Cannot Be Calculated Cleanly

Extract Labs and Aspen Green are examples of a common unit problem. Their reviewed reports express cannabinoid concentration by weight while the seller package is described by liquid volume. Without a reliable density or unit mass, converting those figures into a package total would add assumptions. Those comparisons remain Unknown rather than forcing a number.

Readable Batch Examples Worth Checking Closely

The Product Passport work produced several exact-batch comparisons where the units were usable. These are observations from named batches, not claims about every future batch from a brand.

Sampled ProductLabel / Seller FigureReviewed Lab FigureWhat to Notice
Lazarus Naturals CBD Isolate High Potency Gummies, batch ID39150 mg CBD per serving159 mg CBD per servingAbout 6% above the seller figure; THC and several other cannabinoids were reported below quantitation limits.
Joy Organics Tranquil Mint 1350 mg tincture, lot 260618A1350 mg CBD1768.2 mg CBDAbout 31% above the seller figure in the reviewed certificate.

Limits of This 20-Brand Audit

  • The 20 brands were selected deliberately. This is not a statistically representative market sample.
  • The audit reviews public seller documentation. CBDCafe.org did not purchase or independently retest these products for this report.
  • A seller can change a product page, lab portal, formula, batch, claim, or policy after the check date.
  • A Pass applies only to the field shown. It is not a quality award and does not cancel a Concern in another field.
  • An Unknown is not a failure. It means the evidence available in this check did not support a firmer rating.
  • COA access does not prove product safety, medical benefit, legality, or suitability.

How to Verify a CBD Product Yourself

  1. Find the lot or batch number on the package.
  2. Use the seller’s lab-results page or package QR code to locate the matching certificate.
  3. Confirm the product name, batch identifier, and report date before reading potency.
  4. Compare CBD and THC results with the package wording. Treat ND, LOD, and LOQ as measurement terms, not synonyms for absolute zero.
  5. Check whether the report includes the contaminant panels you expected. Do not assume a missing panel passed.
  6. Save the package photo and certificate if you need to document a product problem later.

Sources and Check Date

The first 12 brands use CBDCafe.org’s current Product Passport and Brand Report Card research files, each of which links to the seller page, batch record, certificate, and other source material used for that audit. Eight extension brands were checked against current seller evidence on September 5, 2026.

Audit snapshot checked: September 5, 2026. Report page version: 1.1.0, September 12, 2026. Scope: seller documentation and named batch records only. Linked Brand Report Cards and Product Passports can carry later check dates; those later records do not convert this frozen audit into a fresh 20-brand review. Recheck the current seller page and matching certificate before relying on a status.
